Neurodivergence at work: cultivating inclusive connections in libraries

with Kate Savageau-Eidem, Technical Services, Dakota County Library

This presentation explores how libraries can create more inclusive workplaces for neurodivergent staff. Neurodivergent individuals may process information and communicate differently, which can lead to misunderstandings in traditional work environments. These differences can lead to misunderstandings in the workplace, especially when there is limited awareness of neurodiversity and the value of diverse cognitive styles. Traditional workplace systems often expect neurodivergent employees to adapt to inflexible environments, which can result in masking; suppressing natural behaviors to appear “typical.” This has negative impacts on well-being and limits the ability of staff to contribute authentically. When neurodivergent team members are supported, their unique skills and perspectives become valuable assets to the organization. This session will highlight the importance of understanding neurodiversity and offer practical strategies for fostering a more inclusive, supportive, and effective library workplace.
