Culturally Responsive Library Walks: A Project Ready tool for Program Improvement

with Mandy Bellm, Minneapolis Public Schools, K-12 Library Media Content Lead

The Culturally Responsive Library Walk is a tool adapted by UNC library department leaders to be a collaborative tool for administrators, librarians, and teachers to assess the library’s responsiveness to the needs of the BIPOC students who attend the school. It can also be utilized as an advocacy tool for additional resources to build programming based on identified needs. Minneapolis Public Schools completed library walks at 50 sites during the 2023-24 school year as part of an LSTA grant. This session will share our experiences, our takeaways, and suggestions for how other school districts and even public libraries might benefit from adapting the tool to their specific needs.
